in the topic How to earn your horses trust and respect in the forum News and Announcements
This is a short article on how to earn your horses trust and respect. 1. Control without pain or fear brings trust and respect. So whether you are doing Round Penning, Change of Direction on the lunge line, Rein Management, or doing riding exercise, if you don’t cause your horse pain or fear you will begin to gain your horses trust and respect along with building a true and strong partnership with your horse. 2. When teaching your horse exercises always break down the exercise into as many steps as you can along with always accepting the slightest try from your horse. When we start putting control without pain or fear, breaking down each exercise into as many steps as you can and accepting the slightest try from your horse you will earn your horses trust and respect and build a stronger partnership with your horse. Give it a try. in the topic Behavior Problems Does Not Mean Harsher Training in the forum News and Announcements
If we ever have ridden or been around horses we all know how frustrating they can be from time to time. We all know the amount of patience it takes to work with horses, the amount of love we have for them, the amount of leadership we have to show them etc. but when we run into behavior problems... for example, not accepting the bit, moving off while mounting, problems trailer loading, refusing to cross the creek, not picking up their feet, etc. we can get a bit impatient with them especially when they have done it a 1,000 times in the past with no problems. Behavior issues do not mean harsher training, it means we go back to the basics at least once or even twice a month and keep our horses sharp on the basics. It means that when we run into a behavior issue, we still need to break that lesson down into steps that the horse can understand to overcome the issue. It means we remain calm and get to the root cause of our horses behavior issue and get it solved whether it is behavior, pain, confusion etc. The worst thing you can do is get harsher during a behavior problem and make that problem worse in your horse, justify your horse’s behavior, and cause new or escalated behavior problems. Always go in order with your horse, Make yourself a check list, #1 Check for pain #2 Go back to the basics #3 Break everything down into steps so your horse can overcome the behavior problem. Going in this order your horse will help you to solve their behavior problem so much easier and faster along with building a stronger partnership and you staying patient with your horse. Harsher training will dissolve the trust your horse has in you, but if you follow the steps outlined here, your horse will continue to trust you and your relationship will continue to grow as well. in the topic You Can’t Change Your Horses Past, But You Can Change His Future in the forum News and Announcements
Whether you brought home a rescue horse that has been abused, and neglected or your horse went through bad training, you can’t change those things. You can’t change the horses past any more than what you had for breakfast this morning. You can have something different tomorrow for breakfast but you can’t change what you already ate this morning for breakfast. When we do get horses that have been abused and neglected, these horses are scared and nervous of us. They can be food aggressive from neglect, or they can be very defensive from abuse, They have no confidence, no trust, no respect, and whatever partnership the horse may have had at one time is gone. These things take a horrible toll on the horses mind, body, and emotions as you can imagine. Now what we can do to change our horse’s future is with a step by step training program to show the horses there is nothing to be scared of, that they will not be neglected or go through bad training ever again. We can teach the horses through quiet consistency, patience and guidance that they will never have any reason to be scared of us. In doing this we have the ability to once again gain our horse’s confidence, trust, respect, and build a strong partnership with our horses along with fixing the food aggression and defensive behavior. Horses are truly one of the most amazing animals as they are so forgiving and so willing to keep trying and learning. Horses are by nature gregarious, and crave leadership. If you have or plan on getting a horse that has gone through really hard times, concentrate on his future and build a strong relationship with your horse and help him to let the past go.
